Welcome to Term 2
We are looking forward to another busy and exciting term for us all at Kidman Park Primary School. In particular, students are already showing their excitement about swimming coming up in Week 3.
In Term 2 for the Connected Curriculum, we will be focusing on what causes change. U3 and U5 will be looking at the following big questions:
- How have significant local Australian sites changed over time? What has caused them to change?
- What are the properties of different materials and why are they used for specific purposes?
- How does temperature effect certain materials? eg. water, chocolate, play dough
- How can materials be changed or remade into new products?
- How do materials interact when mixed?
- How does the human body grow and change over time?
Students will be exploring these questions by observing, asking questions of their own, making predictions, participating in discussions and experimenting. The students will also take part in a Connected Curriculum project, where by they will design an improvement (change) to the school using a range of materials. They will need to consider things such as the needs of the students, the use of appropriate materials, to draw and label diagrams and to write design briefs.
Literacy
We will be focusing on reading comprehension strategies, in particular making inferences and applying knowledge to new situations. We will be continuing to consolidate our knowledge of imaginative texts and recounts, but will be introducing poetry as an added focus. Literacy groups based on your students' needs will be continue to be held four days a week with students moving between U3 and U5, as we work collaboratively.
Numeracy
We will be focusing on extending our number skills by exploring simple multiplication and division strategies. We will continue to consolidate our knowledge of place value and skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s. We will also be introducing measurement to our students, exploring length through formal and informal units, as well as area.
Homework
The DECD requirement for students in Year 2 is 15mins per day. This should consist of practicing sight words (if your child still does them), learning spelling words and reading.
Mathletics and Bug Club is available to all students online, however is not compulsory. See back of sight word book (U5) or communication book (U3) for login details.
